How Many Security Cameras Do I Need? A Guide for Homes and Businesses

Most Houston homes need 4 to 6 security cameras. Small businesses typically need 6 to 10. Warehouses and multi-building sites often need 12 or more. The right number is not about square footage alone; it is about how many entry points, blind corners, and high-value zones your property has.

Camera Counts by Property Type

Single-Family Home: 4 to 6 Cameras

  • Front door and porch: 1 camera or a video doorbell
  • Driveway and garage: 1 camera
  • Backyard and rear entry: 1 to 2 cameras
  • Side yards or gates: 1 to 2 cameras

Corner-lot homes and homes with detached garages usually land at the top of that range. In many Houston neighborhoods, package theft makes the front-facing camera the single most valuable one you will install.

Townhome or Condo: 2 to 3 Cameras

With shared walls, you only need to cover the front entry, any patio or balcony access, and an assigned parking spot if theft from vehicles is a concern.

Small Business or Retail: 6 to 10 Cameras

  • Every public entrance and exit
  • Point of sale and cash-handling areas
  • Stockroom and receiving door
  • Parking area and dumpster zone

Warehouse or Industrial: 12 or More

Dock doors, yard gates, interior aisles, and perimeter fence lines each need dedicated coverage. Wide 4K cameras reduce the total count because one camera can cover two dock positions.

The Three Rules That Decide Your Count

First, cover every way in. Doors and ground-floor windows come before anything decorative. Second, cover what a thief wants: vehicles, registers, equipment, inventory. Third, avoid single points of failure; if one camera covers your only entrance and it fails, you have nothing, so overlap critical zones.

More Cameras Is Not Always Better

Eight badly placed cameras record less useful footage than four well placed ones. Camera height, angle, and lighting matter more than raw count. A camera mounted too high captures the top of a cap instead of a face. This is the most common mistake we correct on Houston properties that already have DIY systems installed.

Resolution also changes the math. One 4K camera on a corner can cover two sides of a building with enough detail to zoom in after the fact, where two 1080p cameras would have been needed. If your budget forces a choice, fewer high-resolution cameras in the right spots beat more low-resolution cameras spread thin.
